As a result of an $800K OLDCC Compatible Use Investment, the Mid-Carolina Council of Governments (with 8 counties and 13 municipalities) reviewed over 318 development projects and rejected approximately 114 in support of military readiness at Fort Bragg. Those rejected projects primarily threatened the use of the St. Mere Eglise Drop Zone and Grey Eagle UAV operations. This review supplements local government compliance with the State’s amended law requiring local governments to notify commanders of military bases of any proposed subdivisions or zoning changes within 5 miles of an installation’s boundaries. The State also set aside $1M annually to resolve compatible use issues around military bases.
